Down Town

Sao Paulo Diary

No matter what city I've been to, down town is usually the best part of it. Mixed cultures, people of all ages and origins, a big melting pott of life. It was no different in Sao Paulo. Loads of little street markets, African shopping malls where I found more than 20 places to renew my braids, beautiful old houses that are legally occupied, and the most interesting faces everywhere.

It sometimes looked like a film set because of all those colourful old buildings from a different time period. We managed to find someone who got us in one of the occupied houses, giving us a little tour. To my surprise everything was so perfectly organized and clean that some Berlin flats look far worse. Its a legal grey area and due to the law everyone has a right of living space. If the government can't provide it, you are allowed to look for yourself. This system seems to work amazingly well, and those stunning buildings would otherwise be left empty anyway, as most owners aren't even in the country any more.
