May I introduce: Dasha Love

Photographer Interview

Dasha Love is a mix of first name and nick name and that already makes her kind of special. Before you really realize it, you are already caught in the rainbow world of 24 year old Dasha. Living in London she has already quite a list of magazines she shot for (e.g. Vice, Dazed&Confused, I love Fake etc.), Teenager being, first loves, fluffy badges, gumball machines and body sticker make you want to quit your job and become a 14 year old again. Naive and authentic photos that make you want to quit your job and become this 14 year old brace wearing girl that admires her teacher from the last row again.

Describe the last photo you took?
I took a picture with an iphone of my little sister riding a pony.  When did you start photographing?  I got my first camera when I was 16, and did black and white photography during my Alevels. I seriously got back into it in 2009.

Your photography usually shows something more than fashion. It rather focuses on the documentary part. Is that something you enjoy more? If so why?
Well to me the difference between a fashion shoot and a documentary shoot is just that it's organized beforehand, with certain choice of location, styling and model scouting. Yeah I aim to take a good portrait and to picture the mood of the model. I enjoy that most because I think that makes a picture unique.

Do you prefer working more with models or with characters / friends?
I like working with both, working with friends is amazing and fun. At the same time I am so fascinated with beauty that working with models is a really amazing experience too because they are all so pretty, such a pleasure to photograph them.    Who are your top 3 model faces? I really always liked Gemma Ward and Zippora Seven.

What was the best shoot you had in the past? Why?
It's hard to say, every shoot I did in the past has been a unique and exciting event. One of the best shoots I did so far was actually the first fashion shoot I put together. I found these two amazing girls, I wanted them to look like sisters and shot in an old Russian apartment. One of the pictures from it is still in my book and the other one is doing really well on tumblr

You also photograph for magazines in Korea and Japan, how did that happen?
Elle Korea interviewed the curator of our art collective “The Ardorous” about the artists and featured one of my images. I met the editor of Elle Girl Japan during my trip to Kyoto and Tokyo last summer, so I did a shoot for them and I am also starting my own blog for them. I work a lot with Cooler magazine and my current job is a brand ambassador for O'Neill, you can find more information about it on their website. I also work part time at a bar called Old Blue Last .

Which photographer inspires you? Why?
Ryan McGinley is my favorite; there is also a lot of really cute pictures on tumblr to look at. I get inspired mostly just from my surroundings and finding someone really cute looking that I want to photograph.

What makes your personal work different from the one in magazines and why?
Personal work is something that wasn't shot for any specific publication.

In your personal works there are a lot of experimental colourful photos, what’s the procedure there?
That's a bit of a secret actually, something I have been working on for a little while now, I am really fascinated with bright colors and psychedelic effects.

Do you prefer shooting on location or in the studio?
It depends on the idea, I prefer shooting on the location though.   Is there a special location you would like to shoot at? Old places and beautiful nature are especially delightful for me. I think there is a tonne of amazing locations in La and America in general because in England there's too many health and safety regulations, so you can't get places and old buildings often get made up.

What music describes you best?
 Top 5 bands/ artist
It's hard to say , I like so many different things ! Like hip hop, shoe gaze, 90's pop and RnB, I also like good stoner metal bands like Sleep and stuff.

Do you have a favorite designer?
My favorite designer is Vivienne Westwood, I also like many street wear brands and vintage clothing.  Which brands do you wear in your free time?   I wear a lot of vintage denim and t shirts, vans.

If you were meant to shoot an advertising campaign, for which fashion brand would you like to do it?    There is a lot of cute brands out there that I’d like to shoot for, number one is Vans for me at the moment.

Which magazines would you like to shoot for in the future?
There is a few very cool publications out there , I am also looking forward to starting my own.
