May I Introduce: Tony Gum

Artist Portrait

The world of instagram is full of amazing artists that just have to be found. There is no real system... it's like a treasure hunt and it's definitely one of my favourite activities because it's so rewarding. Whenever I discover someone new it's like a new world of inspiration opening up and I get lost for hours to make sure I've seen every single picture that account has to offer.

My most recent find is super babe Tony Gum. Living in Cape Town, Southafrica she works as a photographer, model, artist... how many talents can you find in one person?! Her work features brands like adidas, and Coca Cola in a very new and unseen way! I love her use of colours and style. Here are a few parts of a portrait Vogue did on her a few month ago!

"I’m in love with Consuelo Castiglioni designs (for Marni); Celeste Arendse’s line, Selfi; and South African designer, Anees Petersen’s label, Young and Lazy.  My favorite local stores have to be the Corner Store CPT, Superbalist, and Merchants on Long, which stocks another favorite, MaXhosa by Laduma."

"I’m inspired by choice of color, specifically in The Grand Budapest Hotel. My favorite movie moment comes from (Edward Scissorhands in) Tim Burton’s suburbia scene, when Edward Scissorhands and his mother drive through the highly stylized neighborhood. In both of these films, these incredible directors have made my love for pastel grow fonder. Rockers is [also] so brilliant! It’s a 1978 Jamaican film by Theodoros Bafaloukos that I discovered on Instagram."

"Adidas is a classic brand that I’ve come to admire from a young age. I still remember how cool my brothers used to look pairing their Adidas sandals with their Adidas socks. I guess I have a thing for timeless brands and how they reenvision their advertisements."

"Almost everybody in Cape Town wants to be unique and there are many subcultures such as hip-hop heads, Pantsula devotees, hippies, grunge, dapper folks, etc. . . . Influences and microtrends of the diverse divisions are represented through accessories like bucket hats, unisex wide-brim hats, facial piercings, layered bracelets, and big bags."
