Ward Roberts

I am always inspired by photographers who are able to create architectural shots which convey some kind of emotional message, simply through their use of colour or composition, so you can imagine my glee in discovering Ward Roberts.

His ability to transform otherwise simple architecture into eerily beautiful, Wes Anderson-esque dreamscapes is captivating. I love the aesthetics of his court series, the subdued but still bright colours juxtaposed with an overwhelming sense of vacancy. The use of courts emphasizes the static nature of his images, as they are scenes we normally associate with movement and sound; populated with running children, or sports players shouting at one another. Instead they are shown static and empty, mere architectural structures, dystopian through this contradiction. The feeling of loneliness and isolation is emphasized, demanding great emotion from the observer.

As it says on his website, “Ward Roberts is an independent conceptual artist who creates exquisitely composed photographs drawing on themes such as loneliness and isolation in the modern world.” (ward-roberts)

“The ‘courts’ series is a tribute to Robert’s childhood spent in Hong Kong, playing outside with children of varying cultures. It was there he learned that youth transcends language; that contradictions can be unifying. in his soulful photographs, the pastel hues contradict the hard, concrete composition. the cramped, vertical apartment blocks are pitted against vast, empty spaces. returning to a place with fondness can portend disappointment, and in this instance, the laughing children of Robert’s youth are nowhere to be seen. there is a sense of the lives of the new inhabitants being lived indoors, and memories fading.” (ward-roberts)
